Gilbert of Hethpool in Sacramento with Mary and Jim

I arrived in Sacramento City, the capital of the State of California to visit Mary Purvis and Jim Tashima. Mary and Jim had visited Northumberland in the summer of 2010 and could understand my accent and they made me feel quite at home but Killa the Siamese cat was not so friendly and I had to sleep in my box every night so he couldn't chew my fleece.

One of Sacramento's nicknames is the "Camellia City" because camellias grow profusely in many private and public gardens. Because they look so b
eautiful, I thought they would smell lovely but when Mary lifted me up to smell them in her garden, there was no scent at all.

Jim and Mary took me for a tour around Sacramento and the weather was gorgeous.

I checked out the California State Capitol where
the governor, the State Assembly and the State Senate try to agree on legislation to run the state. Mary said it hasn't worked very well, especially over the last several years when Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor. But now that there's a new governor, she hopes more common sense will emanate from the state Capitol.

Jim and Mary saw Queen Elizabeth waving from the balcony of the State Capitol in
February 1983.From the Capitol, a large
swathe of grass runs westwards for several blocks on Capitol Mall between government buildings, large banks and expensive offices.
Mary let me wander around and graze for a while on the grass in the warm sunshine, so
different from January in Northumberland.

In this photo you can see the Tower Bridge, painted in
gold paint, which spans the Sacramento River. Mary crosses the river five days a week to go to work.

We also looked at Sutter's Fort, originally owned by John Sutter who also owned a saw mill in Coloma.
In January 1848, the mill manager arrived at the fort and showed John Sutter some gold that he'd found near the mill; word got out and so the California gold rush began.

Apart from dealing with Killa, I enjoyed my stay but am now getting ready to go across the Sacramento River to stay with Bill Rich. He doesn't have a cat but he does have a corgi so I don't know what kind of welcome to expect. And Mary mentioned something about margaritas and Hawaii; what does that mean?
